its cool. I am a web designer so I would need the capability to export a graphic layout to either a div based or table based (pending the purpose) format. This is just one of the many things fireworks did better than any other item offered by adobe. There are other products but its interface was easy on the brain and packed a punch!

Fireworks is a needed element in Adobe's collection. The bugs you speak of are within all and any of Adobe's products different bugs for different software. i just think they and many others whom never bothered to even learn the products capabilities just tossed it.

i for one can tell you,it could have crashed my whole machine twice-a-day and it would still be a better choice than Photoshop for web and mock app design.

Please make sure your websites are FASTER! Everything needs to be optimized, maybe its the server its on, but I just feel like all your projects were painfully slow to load up.

Inkscape does next to none of the things people liked fireworks for. If all people where looking for is a vector editing app they would have moved to illustrator years ago.

People liked fireworks because its workflow and capabilities were tailored to users creating artwork for web design.

When I was writing this blog post I had in mind that Inkscape is a free alternative to the vector graphics side of things.

Thumbs up to Adobe, Fireworks and Illustrator just had too many things in common. I've been working for years with Adobe products and Fireworks diffidently was their worst software. Bugs and lags in the interface. Yuk!

I've used Fireworks for years to finish off webcomics with. It's spell checkers and text controls, combined with the ease in which you can create and edit speech balloons, made it a joy to use.

Inkscape does somethings really well, but Fireworks has stuff Inkscape doesn't, like spell-checking, the ability to export to something other than just PNG, dynamic placement of images when importing, more control over text, etc. However, as Fireworks is now defunct and Inkscape is still being developed, there's still hope.

Sucks. I've been using Fireworks for years. It is much better than Photoshop at doing web design. Inkscape is pretty darn good. I really tried it but some things I just couldn't get used to. Like how it was always working with fractions of a pixel. How is that even possible?

One day I realized something. I found that I have been drawing web elements in Fireworks that CSS could already do. I also have been using Firebug but wished I could just drag stuff around instead. Because I'm a developer myself I decided to create a web based web prototyping and mock up tool.

It is called Meldbox: An alternative to Fireworks (meldbox.net)

I use it for my web and app development now and it really works great. I was quite surprised. The functionality and usability is loosely based off of Fireworks so folks will be able to pick it up quite easily.

Give it a try. Lemme know whatcha think.

Inkscape is probably a good alternative to Illustrator but when it comes to pages and page states, I think it has a long way to go.

It's all fair and fine that Inkscape can create nice vector graphics, but I doubt all the clamour is only about FW's vector graphics capabilities.

FW is the most productive application for making web app and web page interfaces. There is no close equal at a time when the sheer volume of web development projects has soared to dizzy heights
